Rat-a-tat-tat, baby. Jazz has always been an improvisation. We like to scat as much as much as any R-Lifer, but sometimes it’s simply best left to the professionals. Take jazz pianist Eric Lewis, for example, when he took the stage at last Wednesday’s VIP kickoff at the Mayflower Renaissance Hotel for the Atlantic Magazine’s “First Draft in History” event.
Picture a thrown-aside piano bench and open-mouthed crowd – especially when he put his own spin on songs by The Killers, Nirvana, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and The Rolling Stones.
The show’s experimental flavor was right in sync with the party itself, held at The Mayflower Renaissance Washington DC and hosted by The Atlantic Magazine and Thomson Reuters.
Spotted in the crowd: White House economic advisor Austan Goolsbee (fresh off his “D.C.’s Funniest Celebrity” win), Kathleen Matthews, and ABC’s Ann Compton.
Also, see Eric Lewis’ impassioned performance at TED.
