We at Renaissance are extremely proud of our partnership with Joya Studios – a fantastic fragrance design studio based in Brooklyn, NY. Together with the Joya team, we have crafted a delightful scent in the form of candles and diffusers that we know all Renaissance visitors will love and will cherish as a part of their Renaissance stay.
Last week we headed to Brooklyn to see the process from start to beginning for ourselves. Joya Studios not only collaborates with it’s customers to create the perfect scent, but they also have an in-house ceramics studio and artists who are responsible for designing and actually creating the candle holders. They then scent and pour the wax, insert the wick, individually package the candles, and and ship the candles out to Renaissance locations all over the world right from their studio.
Frederick Bouchardy, founder and CEO of Joya Studios, believes that the olfactory sense is just as important to an experience, a memory, or a feeling, as any of the other four primary senses. For that reason, he worked hand-in-hand with us to create this unique scent that we truly believe encapsulates a Renaissance experience. Using an ancient Japanese candle-making technique, Joya Studios is one of the few candle making studios that really owns the entire process from beginning to end, and maintains a handmade touch in everything that it does.
Enjoy these photos from the creation process, and we hope that you can experience the Renaissance scent soon!
Candles and diffusers are on display in limited locations, as well as for sale at Shop Renaissance.
Step aside, New York and Milan — the up-and-comer in high fashion is Puerto Rico, known for its chic Latin-infused looks. This year’s Puerto Rico High Fashion Week was held at La Concha Renaissance San Juan Resort, where 14 designers (including Jaer Caban) showcased their runway looks over two days.
In Italy, the Scuotto brothers are known as fine artisans– originally small shop purveyors of exquisite cribs (presepi), they became well-known to the point of being commissioned to make statues for the Spanish royal family’s private collection.
For their respect for the craft, they founded the Absenteeism Movement, which stressed the idea that art is a public resource that must be popularly exhibited and its creation must be understandable, direct and meaningful. One of their most symbolic works, “The Monument to Lazzarone” — an evocative veiled Pulcinella framed by four skulls — was erected last July and quickly catalyzed debate about the role of art. The piece was ultimately removed, only seen by a photographer who’d been involved in the creation. Since then the complete work has never been installed again — until now.
The Renaissance Naples Hotel Mediterraneo is resurrecting that work almost a year after its dismantling. The piece will be on display in the hotel lobby from mid-May through mid-June.
DeBat joins a roster of young and emerging talent showcased by the property in an homage to the city’s rich arts scene; over 1,600 original works, most of them by Chicago artists, are on permanent display throughout the hotel. And if you’re looking to take a little bit of DeBat’s work home with you, we’ve got you covered: prints and t-shirts are available for purchase in the hotel’s Guilt Shop.
It’s Southern hospitality at its finest: this Friday, March 25, is opening day for the Renaissance Atlanta Midtown Hotel. Only 15 miles from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and steps from the Georgia Tech campus, Piedmont Park and The High Museum of Art, the hotel is at the pulse of the city’s music, arts and business scenes.
Cruise through our lobby with a fireplace and floating 442-gallon salt water aquarium, and you’ll know what you’re in store for. Rooms have skyline views, oversized bathrooms, 37-inch LCD HDTVs and high-speed Internet. The fitness center is open 24 hours, with state-of-the-art cardio equipment, balance balls, and yoga mats. A rooftop lounge with cabanas and views of downtown is the perfect after-dinner spot to unwind with a cocktail.
Plus, there’s complimentary wine tastings in the lobby everyday from 5-6pm — happy hour, anyone?

Renaissance Arlington Capital Viewopened its doors on March 9, and now we’ve got the inside scoop — literally. Design-savvy press took note of the “striking” and “memorable” bathroom accents, but architectural and artistic touches can be found throughout the hotel. The photos speak for themselves — see them after the jump.
Some hotels measure the quality of their interior design by how well the Victorian floral-print drapery matches the Victorian floral-print rug. Yeah…not quite our style. We’re into design that’s a little more modern, a little more clean. We respect the artistic organization of a space. And we like it when a Renaissance designer understands our vision and uses his or her talent to realize it.
David Ashen of d-ash design has succeeded in doing just that. An environmental designer based in New York, Ashen recently transformed the lounge of our Detroit gem, the Baronette Renaissance Hotel. Comforting earth tones paired with steel and glass create an airy, modern space. Egg-shaped hanging chairs gently sway in one area, while a sculpture-filled, wall-length white bookcase accents another.
Get cozy near the fireplace, or curl up on a couch by the picture-pane windows. We wouldn’t expect our guests to hang in a lounge that we wouldn’t hang in ourselves —and this lounge is definitely a place where we’d kick up our feet. Trust.

Inspired by the building’s unique architecture, as well as the continually evolving Renaissance style, the Renaissance Paris Le Parc Trocadero designer has big things in mind for the hotel’s 2011 makeover. With refined textures, warm colors, and an overall feel rooted in the past but embracing contemporary Paris, the renovation will give Paris-bound guests a thoroughly new experience. Need a little proof? Check out the photos after the jump for a sneak peek.
The hotel closed this week to begin renovations but will open again on March 14, 2011. If you’re eager to check out the new look once it’s unveiled, take advantage of this great deal, exclusively for Marriott Rewards members, to get 15% off weekend rates while you enjoy springtime in France.
Part of the magic of the Western Canal Route in Amsterdam is the Koepelkerk. The 17th century church has become a prominent feature of Renaissance Amsterdam. Its dome seems to continually impress visitors, regardless of the purpose of their visit. Esquire’s annual Best Dressed Man competition recently took place in the hotel’s convention center and the afterparty for the event was held in the beautifully-lit Koepelkerk.
As for the competition, it was quite the party. VIPs and nominees enjoyed a four-course dinner by the hands of Executive Chef Michel Westerman in the hotel’s restaurant, Scossa, prior to the competition. Other fashion-forward folks hit the red carpet of the church before the men hit the stage… all of this in honor of 20 years of Esquire in The Netherlands.
65-year-old writer/poet, Jules Deelder, won the competition. Cited as a man with consistently tasteful style over the last 20 years, we think he deserves the award.
Check out a picture of Jules Deelder accepting the award from Esquire’s chief editor, Arno Kantelberg, after the jump.
Eden Roc Renaissance’s brand new restaurant, 1500°, just opened… and with a bang. The farm-to-table, steakhouse-leaning restaurant has found a happy home in Miami. With vibrant and seasonal cuisine, 1500° is quickly earning its reputation as a delicious and green spot to dine in South Florida. Seating 160, the restaurant offers an elegant and still welcoming environment for those in the area.
1500° is also a go-to spot for art-appreciators. Both culinary and visual art enrich the restaurant and help it to stand out in a city filled with restaurants. Executive Chef Paula DaSilva is no stranger to talent-induced limelight. As a star of the television hit, Hell’s Kitchen, DaSilva’s work at 1500° has been widely lauded despite the short time the spot has been open.
Peter Tunney has built his visual art career on messages. Whether through words or collages, Tunney’s art conveys resounding messages in beautiful ways. Tunney’s collage-esque art now drapes over the walls of 1500°.
Excellent cooking is one thing. Excellent cooking prepared with local food and paired with remarkable art is an entirely different thing… it’s Eden Roc’s new restaurant, 1500°.
